Last year, when the Steelers were playing the Seahawks in the Superbowl, everybody was joking that if the Seahawks lost, they'd mope around for a week and drink coffee, but if the Steelers lost, then we'd have people jumping out of windows left and right.
Steelers fans aren't like any other football fans. They're CRAZY.
Cher fans also aren't like any other music fans. They're crazy.
But maybe I'm just defending Pittsburgh, but I think that while the Steelers fanatics are funny and nuts, Cher fanatics are sometimes...a little disturbing, for lack of a better word.
I've been in love with Cher since I was 13, and I was a Cher fanatic until I was about 15. And looking back on it, I realize how creepy I was. If anybody dared to insult Cher, I'd kick his or her ass. I plastered her picture all over my locker and binders, I toted around The First Time with me everywhere, I wore her shirts every day, I wanted a Cher tattoo...hell, I prayed for her each night. On Thanksgiving I even said I was thankful for not my family or friends, but for Cher.
I still have kids come up to me and say, "Hey, aren't you the girl who's obsessed with Cher?"
I think this is unhealthy.
Recently at a Cher group on myspace, some guy said something along the lines of "Cher is a demon!!11 Hehehe" and people replied with comments like, "CHER'S LITTLE FINGER IS WORTH MORE THAN YOUR ENTIRE EXISTENCE; I HOPE YOU DIE."
I love Cher, and I probably always will. I still have four Cher posters in my room, she takes up a hefty chunk of my iPod, and she is my favorite performer. But I'm getting a little creeped out by the fact that so many Cher fanatics elevate her to a level of divinity -- and we all know she is but human. I'm a slave to many fandoms, and in my experience, only Cher fans act this way. They live, breathe, and sleep Cher. The younger ones want Cher to be their mother, and the older ones want Cher to be their lover. In my opinion, they're one step below stalkers.
What is it about Cher that phases people so?
Thoughts?
