I know we are already like six weeks into 2006, but I finally had a chance to put together my annual list of my 100 favorite songs of the year... This list is something I've been doing each year since 1975.....
Basically, long story short, I make a weekly Top 20 chart... each week that a song is on my weekly chart, it gets points... the points that a song receives each week is based on the song's chart position... so, a song at #1 would get the most points that week... and a song at #20 would get the least... when a song falls off, all the points that it got each week are added up... and that total is what determines where the song is on my "Best of" list at the end of the year... got it?

and, my #1 song of 2005... which was also my #1 song of 2004....
# 1. "HUMAN" -- CHER
"THE SECOND TIME"
"Human" debuted on my chart the week that the STUCK ON YOU DVD was released... it would have made my chart long before then, but it wasn't eligible since the song wasn't available anywhere (I still can't believe they never had a soundtrack for SOY!!)... and since I could never confirm whether any "promo" singles had been officially released, I couldn't debut the song until it was available on the SOY DVD... so, on May 1, 2004, "Human" debuted at #20, and six weeks later on June 5 (my birthday!), it was #1, and it stayed there for 6 weeks.
But "Human" stuck around for a LONG time, spending a total of SEVENTY weeks on my chart... During it's long chart run, "Human" returned to the #1 spot three more times in 2004 (July 31, August 21, December 18), and once more in 2005 (February 5).
"Human" spent it's 70th and last week on my chart (August 27, 2005) where it all began -- at #20... the next week, it was gone... But I have a good feeling that it will be back someday... (still keeping my fingers crossed that "Human" will be on Cher's next album... )
By the way, this isn't "the first time" that the same Cher song has been my #1 song of the year for two years in a row... "Angels Running" was my #1 song of 1996 and 1997, and now "Human" for 2004 and 2005.
LMP MANIA!
Lisa Marie Presley's NOW WHAT album was a major highlight of 2005... "Dirty Laundry" spent one week at #1 in May, and "Idiot" was #1 for 4 weeks in July... "Thanx" peaked at #3 in October. "I'll Figure It Out" is currently in my Top 10, and I also want to chart the song "Shine" with P!nk.... and maybe one or two more... LOVE that album!!!!
INXSIVE
INXS went to #1 in September with "Move On", an outake from 1987's mega-huge album, KICK... The song was included as a bonus track on the 2002 KICK re-issue, and I had wanted to chart the song back then, but didn't... When "Rockstar: INXS" began, I thought it would be a perfect time to chart "Move On", a really cool tune with some great vocals by Michael Hutchence... RIP...
The week that "Rockstar:INXS" ended, "Move On" was my #1 song... I thought it to be an appropriate #1 song that week, mainly because of the song's title (and I love that the song was originally titled "Monkey"!!)... Despite what critics and commedians say about the band for doing the TV show, I think that now that they have their new lead singer, they can just "move on", and get back to doing what they do best: making great music.
SWITCH, their first album with JD Fortune, is incredible... "Pretty Vegas" was #1 for 3 weeks in October...
I have VH1 on in the background, and "Pretty Vegas" is the video that's playing right now as I'm typing this...
On my current Top 20 chart, INXS have two songs with JD as the lead singer ("Pretty Vegas" is #19 and "Afterglow" debuts at #20), and two with Michael -- "Need You Tonight" (Remixes) moves from #16 to #14, and "Dream On Black Girl (Original Sin)" by KASH vs. INXS moves up from #14 to #11. The two tracks with Michael are new VERY COOL remixes that are also hits in US and French dance clubs: the new remixes of "Need You Tonight" are currently on the Billboard "Dance/Club Play" chart, and "Dream On Black Girl (Original Sin)" is currently on the French Dance Club chart...
MADGE RULES!
I know I'm in the minority, but I thought Madonna's AMERICAN LIFE album was incredible... I admit that I don't like the rap section in the song "American Life", and "I'm So Stupid" is, well... it's just plain stupid... but I think all of the other songs are amazing... In 2005, "X-Static Process" spent one week at #1 in February, and "Intervention" peaked at #4 in April.
All-in-all, AMERICAN LIFE had SIX #1 songs on my chart: "Hollywood", "Nothing Fails", "Nobody Knows Me", "Love Profusion", "Mother And Father", and "X-Static Process". Both "American Life" and "Die Another Day" peaked at #5, and "Intervention" peaked at #4... And most people consider AMERICAN LIFE a failure?
Not in my book....
But then came CONFESSIONS ON A DANCE FLOOR.... WOW!!! Her best album EVER!!!!!! "Hung Up" spent three weeks at #1 in November, and this week, "Sorry" spends its third week at #1... yes, believe it or not, Cher is not #1 on my chart right now... LOL!!
But she probably will be again soon... Since the EXTRAVAGANZA: LIVE AT THE MIRAGE DVD was finally released on DVD last November, those live songs are finally eligible to make my chart!!! So far, "I'm No Angel" and "Hold On" have both spent 3 weeks at #1, and I'll probably debut "Take It To The Limit" in the next couple weeks...
Here is my current Top 20 chart, for the week ending February 11, 2006:
#20. "Afterglow" -- INXS (DEBUT)
#19. "Pretty Vegas" -- INXS (down 2) (former #1 for 3 weeks)

# 3. "Sleep" -- Texas and Paul Buchanen (up 1)
# 2. "Nth Degree" -- Morningwood
# 1. "SORRY" -- MADONNA
#1 for a 3rd week!!!
Basically, long story short, I make a weekly Top 20 chart... each week that a song is on my weekly chart, it gets points... the points that a song receives each week is based on the song's chart position... so, a song at #1 would get the most points that week... and a song at #20 would get the least... when a song falls off, all the points that it got each week are added up... and that total is what determines where the song is on my "Best of" list at the end of the year... got it?
