CHATSWORTH, Calif., Aug 22, 2005 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- Egami Media, Inc., a subsidiary of Image Entertainment, Inc. (NASDAQ:DISK) focused on the aggregation and wholesale exploitation of digital rights, today announced it has secured the digital distribution rights to a total of more than 1,200 individual video programs since its formation as a subsidiary of Image Entertainment in January 2005.
"Digital distribution is a part of the home entertainment industry's natural evolution and should be a priority for any entertainment company with an eye toward the future," said Martin W. Greenwald, president and CEO of Image Entertainment and chairman of the board of Egami Media. "In addition to acquiring exclusive digital distribution rights for both video and audio content, Egami is continually seeking to identify new distribution channels where these rights can be exploited. I am excited by what we see happening in the digital space and I believe Egami is well positioned to establish itself as a leader in this industry in much the same way Image has accomplished in the DVD arena."
Since its formation, Egami Media has amassed a diverse digital library of programming containing more than 1,200 individual video programs. Live music programs include "Cher: The Farwell Tour," the restored extended version of "Cream's Farewell Concert," an assortment of programs from jazz great Chick Corea as well as dozens of performances from across the musical spectrum. Restored silent and classic films include historically significant programs from D.W. Griffith ("Intolerance," "Birth of a Nation"), F.W. Murnau ("Nosferatu") and shorts from Charlie Chaplin's Mutual years among others. The library also includes Bruce Brown's classic surf films ("Endless Summer"), the MacGillivray Freeman IMAX collection, stand-up comedy performances, television programming and foreign and independent films.
In parallel with the growth of its library, Egami Media has also expanded its customer base to include companies such as CinemaNow, Akimbo, TotalVid, DaveTV, VCinema and Media Center on Demand. Egami is also in negotiations with numerous other retail partners who inhabit a traditional online space as well as several who service non-traditional channels like college campus and library systems.
"As the digital landscape at retail evolves and expands so too will Egami's relationships," said Burgess Wilson, vice president of business development of Image Entertainment. "We are aggressively looking for new opportunities to digitally distribute our catalog and are enthusiastic about the future. We believe that there will be many significant new retail outlets and opportunities in this marketplace and we are well positioned to support and capitalize on them."
