My tape is in, ready to roll!!! Woot....so freakin' excited about her being on Ellen....I love the both of them so it's a great combo! ...though I will admit when Ellen had her sitcoms back years ago, I didn't care for her all that much. Don't know why...but anyway, now that she's had her talk show, I LOVE her. Really funny and I thought it was great she allowed McCain on her show even though she's obviously voting for Obama (so am I!)...I caught the YouTube clips of when he was on and it was funny....Ellen grilled him a little bit and you could tell he was squirming in his seat. (no offense to the McCain supporters...I'm just poking fun at person I'm not voting for, and I'm an Independent so I'm not partisan. Ooh! Regis and Kelly are over, gotta start tape!!

Yes she sure did look good...hottt is more like it. LMAO. Now I can admit I don't think or say that of many women of her age (no offense to anyone, of course, but she could be my grandmother!), so that's saying something!! Love how she lifts my spirits just from listening to her talk... ;D Jan, how is everything going with your health and stuff?

Sorry to hear that, Jan! I'll keep my fingers crossed for you that things start going your way for the rest of '08! Things here are so-so. The rain won't stop and it's very windy and just plain yucky. And, my luck with job stuff hasn't been going well. I got a call from Manpower asking if I wanted to work a temp job at a surplus and salvage warehouse (we have a chain of stores in maine that sells name brand stuff much cheaper). I said yes, because I figured it was better than nothing...well big mistake because there were other people there working through manpower and they had been there longer since I was a replacement for someone else....well one of them and a regular employee placed phone calls to my manpower rep. telling her that I was "snappy" and rude to them and a replacement was needed. Oy! I worked Wed, Thurs, and Fri....I got the phone call on Friday during one of our breaks, and she told me to call her after work. I called her, and all I could do was ball hysterically...I knew from day one that no one liked me...I was getting dirty looks, rude remarks, and they were leaning over talking to one another about me and I knew something was up. I just can't believe they were in such a clique that they needed to call and make phony reports about me. And the punch to all this is that in the AM of that same day my m.p. rep had called my house to leave a message about how she got a very good report from the supervisor and congratulated me on a very good job. ha! So go figure....don't know how you can go from two very different degrees in such a short amount of time, but oh well! 3 days, (27 1/2 hours) of work for that dang place was enough for me anyway...I was making the best of it and kept telling myself it was just a temp job and I could get through it, but I guess in a way they did me a favor by cutting things short! ...just so upsetting because I never snapped at anyone or said much of anything... guess some people have boring lives and I was their entertainment sorry for venting...trying not to let this get me down. if anything, it's another reminder of why I want & need to go back to school! and atleast my m.p. rep told me she didn't believe any of it either but had to go by what they requested...she said she would call me if anything else came up for work. meanwhile, i'm back to job searching, and also looking at some schools/courses.

Thanks Jan, I feel a lot better about everything now and I'm not letting this bad experience get to me. Surprisingly enough there aren't a lot of temp agencies here in Maine that I know of. There is Manpower, which I know is like nation-wide, then there's a local (I think) place called AtWork which I do need to go sign up with. Oh and I think maybe one other, but other than that don't know of any.
I have applied with two different hospitals, both of which include a lot of different places because they are pretty widespread, but nada. But I know what you mean, Jan, usually a hospital setting provides more job openings and same with a bigger company.
I'm going down tomorrow to a convenience store that has an opening. They offer benefits, which surprised me since most of those types of places don't...but heard the family that runs it is super nice, they have a handful of stores around the state and are looking into opening some more, but each store has it's own personality and mom & pop kinda feel...not like a big chain/company such as Irving which was where I worked previously for a long time. What the hey, if I get the job it'll keep me afloat until I can find something different or figure out my plans for school. A job is a job..

LMAO Jan. Somedays I really do think long and hard about relocating!! But, right now my gf and I are pretty content with staying around here....maybe not forever, but just for now. Her dad is terminally ill so moving out of state makes her nervous as he's already had a lot of scares...he's actually died more than once and been brought-back, once by her and a couple of times by her mom...I was there once when it happened, and let me tell ya...witnessing something like that impacts your life for sure. He says that when it has happened, he sees the other side and they tell him he's not ready to go...and they push him back. BUT on a very good note, just got a call about an hour ago from my local Wal-Mart...I filled out an online application the other day for the hell of it. It took me forever to fill everything out...seemed endless, and then there was a 'test', which once finished tells you automatically whether it's a pass or fail. I passed (lmao, the questions were so super easy). But anyway, got a call today letting me know they wanted to set up an interview for Monday at 10 AM. Yay! A job is a job and I am so glad it's not through Manpower! It may only be a seasonal position, but heard that a lot of times they will keep you on if they have any openings or like you. Either way, works for me. Jan, how much is gas in NY? Today I got gas for $1.96 a gal. And that had just gone down from 1.99. My gf said she saw one place today that had it for about 1.80. Boy oh boy look at me ramble! -julie

Not to come off as rude or unappreciative of your warning, but.... I've known a lot of people that have worked for them and it hasn't always been wonderful stories, but it's a job and at this point I will deal with whatever comes my way. It may just be a seasonal position, anyway...whether it's seasonal, part time, or full time, it won't be something I'll be making my long-term career. I just need something to keep me afloat so I can feel comfortable in getting back into college stuff. The last place I was at, it wasn't exactly wonderful all the time and I often felt employees weren't treated well but they liked me and I worked hard and made the best of a bad situation. That's all that can be done sometimes until something 'better' comes along. Hope I didn't sound rude...just kinda how I feel about it.

Julie, my cousin worked when Walmart switched management and the change was beyond palpable. Where are you going to school? You can probably to some work-study (and for way better wages).

I went for the interview today, and going back tomorrow for the 2nd. The interviewers failed to tell me I was going to have a second interview today, so I went home and got a phone call telling me they couldn't find me so wanted to 'reschedule' for tomorrow.
I was interviewed for an overnight shift (something like 10p-6:30a), full-time. All it's doing is using a new system they implemented called PICS. There's hand-held scanner device that takes pictures of things that are running low on the sales floor and the person goes out back to gather and replenish the low items.
One of the interviewers went to school with me...not sure that was necessarily appropriate but I don't think it will really affect the final decision one way or another--he was pretty chill. The woman did most of the question asking and he just kinda sat back and filled in the gaps she left out. The questions were absolutely ridiculous, haha. All basically the same, just worded differently in an attempt to disguise that fact.
What bothered me most was I was told to call my references and tell them they better either answer the phone when WalMart calls or they better call back soon thereafter because 'it slows down the process'....I've never heard of a place telling you to do that! Usually when you provide a place with the names and numbers they take care of the rest all on their own...
And I was questioned about a couple of gaps between jobs...which I had explained on the online app...they were basically seasonal things, between my school schedule and such.
Elsa, I'm not currently in school. I went for 2 years and this year makes my second year off. I did work on campus during my first year, and I couldn't get work study...I was making minimum wage. My 2nd year I worked off campus at a convenience/gas station and when I moved I transferred to another store within the corporation. I was working there up until just awhile ago but the commute was too expensive so it wasn't even paying me by the time I paid for gas. Anyway, if Wal-Mart gives me what I put down for the min. amount I'd accept then it's actually a hell of a lot better than some places.
I will have to take my nose ring out while working (they won't even allow it to be covered up) which is a bummer, but I half-expected that would be the case. I remember when employees had tons of facial piercings...

Julie, to what school do you go? NYU's pretty chill about jobs; even if you don't have work-study, you can usually find something, and you'll get paid at least $10/hour. Last year I worked as a tutor on the Upper East Side and got $20/hour for doing basically nothing, which was faaantastic.
