In next week's "TV Guide", there's an article about Nick & Jessica... the article begins like this:
LOOK WHO'S LAUGHING by SHawna Malcom
Nick and Jessica know all the dumb-and-dumber jokes. Now they have their own punch line.
Jessica Simpson and Nich Lachey are having a total 'Newlyweds" moment. But they aren't being trailed by cameras for their hit MTV reality show. They're on a soundstage on the Disney lot in Burbank, California, shooting a comedy sketch for the ABC special "The Nick & Jessica Variety Hour." It's a throwback to the series hosted by another successful married act, Sonny and Cher, right down to the kitschy guests (Kenny Rogers, Mr. T, the Muppets) and show-closing duet. "'I Got You Babe' isn't our favorite song in the world," Simpsons says, crinkling her nose. "But we've gotten so many comparisons to Sonny and Cher, we decided it could be cool."
****************
CRINKLING HER NOSE!!??!! Whatever!!!
Later in the article, is this:
...By the time the couple parodied a Sonny and Cher-esque variety show on "Saturday Night Live" last January, they were already developing "The Nick & Jessica Variety Hour."
The way Simpson sees it, though, any resemblance to the '70s duo is a little off. "I'm Sonny and Nick's Cher," says the Texas-born bombshell, who watched DVDs of "The Sonny & Cher Comedy Hour" as research. "I'm always saying the silly stuff, and Nick's always setting me straight."
Simpson is more like Cher in at least one way, though: She knows what it's like to outshine her husband. While beneficial to both, "Newlyweds" has been especially kind to Simpson, who's signed a slew of endorsement deals and, according to her manager-dad Joe, recently beat out fellow pop diva Britney Spears for the role of Daisy Duke in "The Dukes Of Hazzard" film, set to shoot this summer (a particularly sweet victory for Simpson, who, during the teen-pop explosion, was to Britney what 98 Degrees was to 'NSYNC).

-rips her to shreds- How dare she compare herself to Cher! Cher got to where she is by being talented and classy, not just being rich and beautiful, playing stupid, and ripping off other people's hit TV shows and songs. -kicks her- And I wonder how Cher feels about this...?

Oh this is really pathetic.. I saw about this on Access Hollywood yesterday afternoon.. A quote from Jessica, I wanna be just like Cher so I can take the clothes home with me and keep them, YEA RIGHT!!!! Then I saw the one scene where she has her hair totally straight and they are singing IGYB, DUH, like they can!!! Noone can replace S&C.. My friends wanna watch it just to see, I don't think I could put myself through that torture, lmao!! I caught that Newlyweds show one day, man, I have no idea how that husband puts up with her, she is something.. I agree with you there Ash..

THEY ARE CLOSING WITH "I GOT YOU BABE" !? <Begins to help Ash> I keep trying to tell myself that imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, but that line is wearing thin real fast. Before they get their own series shouldn't they be talented enough to have some originality? I know there is a similar format to many of the variety shows, but Sonny & Cher's style is their own. Nick and Jessica should have the ability to do a show without copying. THE BRIGHT SIDE: All this publicity will only make people even more anxious for the REAL THING and the timing really couldn't be better that The Sonny and Cher Ultimate Collection DVD will be hitting retail stores soon. If this helps propel sales it will give us all an even better shot at a volume 2! ;D ;D ;D Susan:)

I thought you guys were gonna tell me to calm down, hehe. Really, it bothers me that it seems like they plan to mirror so much of the S&C show. They take their concept, their song, and then even watch the show as research. I mean, they're not even ashamed that their next big hit is going to be ripping off another couple's television show. And Jessica, I'm sorry, is soooooo not Cher. She should be so lucky. I do wonder what (the real) Cher thinks of this, though. Wouldn't they have to ask permission to use IGYB? I mean, I know Sonny wrote it and he can't give them permission, but don't the rights roll over to her or something...? You'd think they'd at least want her blessing if they're going to rip off her TV show. And Cher's never been one to stay quiet when something irks her. Hmm.

If it is not their favorite song and she has to "crinkle her nose" at it, than PLEASE do us all a favor and don't do it!!!! I can't believe that they are letting these two do an hour long variety show! They are not even funny!!! I saw them host the billboard awards show in vegas and they "Don't impress me much!" They couldn't keep that show flowing; no one was paying any attention to what they said, they were so dumb and not funny! Eyes rolling all over the place, every time Simpson would talk! A variety show is a great idea but there has to be someone else out there to host it!!! DEE

And Cher's never been one to stay quiet when something irks her. Hmm. She's probably kept quiet because it DOESN'T irk her! My goodness, why is everybody getting their panties in a bunch over this? I think it'll be kind of cool. I'm not a Jessica or Nick fan, but maybe we should wait till we actually SEE the d**n show before we criticize it! Aiyiyiyiyi!

I do like the "Newlyweds" show on MTV, and I'm glad that at least ABC is brave enough to try to bring back variety shows... but I just don't see the appeal of Jessica other than she sometimes has "blonde moments" and can be pretty funny... actually, VERY funny sometimes... And I'm sure they both knew they were going to be compared to Sonny & Cher when they decided to do the variety special... married couple... variety show... it's obvious... But I just wish that they'd been creative enough to try to prove to people that they can be "Nick and Jessica" and not the "new Sonny & Cher", ya know?... And, admitting that they are ending the show by singing a song that THEY DON'T EVEN LIKE is just lame... But, completist that I am, since I do know that they will be singing "I Got You Babe", I will be taping it... and good ratings could mean more variety shows... so, I'll be mature like Elsa and not say anything else until after I watch it...

So what did everyone think of the show?
I didnt watch the whole program, but saw them sing "I Got You Babe".
And all I can say is "Yuck"!!! I am sorry but they butchered the song.
I think they need to leave the classics alone.

I don't know. I thought IGYB sucked at first but Jessica did a nice job on the moving notes near the end. Still not a Jessica fan, still want to slap her, probably won't watch the show again, but I sat through the whole thing and so now I can speak from experience.

I watched Nick and Jessica and It was a terrible rip off of Sonny and Cher but I kind of liked it. They are no Sonny and Cher but they are talented. I wonder if Cher had to give the green light to this project and I wonder if she watched it. Does anyone know?

They didn't use any dialogue or scenes from the show, so permission would not be needed. Of course any music used would have to be cleared, but that would probably have been done thru ASCAP. Susan

In today's "USA Today", they said that ABC is going to be doing another Nick & Jessica variety show later this year... Since their first one aired on Easter Sunday, they are thinking that it would be a good idea to air the second one around Christmas...
I did watch their special, and I have to admit that I thought it was kinda cute... It had some stupid moments, but overall, I thought it was pretty good. I still think that Jessica has a horrible singing voice... Like Jessica said, "I'm Sonny and Nick's Cher", and I totally agree with that...
BTW, the Neilsen ratings came out today, and "The Nick & Jessica Variety Hour" was seen by 11.5 million viewers and it was #17 for the week... Of the 11.5 million total viewers, 6 million of them were in the 18-49 age group.
