My mom's having back surgery tomorrow...two flexible screws put in...It's a three hour procedure and she's supposed to be in the hospital for a couple days. If you guys could just be thinking of her tomorrow and hoping that all goes well...it would mean a lot!

You guys are the best....! Thank you for your thoughts, positive vibes, well wishes, prayers...all of it! My mom's surgery lasted about 4 and a half hours today. She had flexible screws put in three vertebrae (sp?) to help with two badly damaged and herniated discs. The doctor said the surgery went well with fairly no complications...the incision (sp?) he made had to be slightly larger than normal which might increase my mom's recovery time some. We got to see her tonight but she was very groggy and sleepy and in a lot of pain. We're going back tomorrow in the early morning to spend the day with her. The doctor said she could go home tomorrow if she feels up to it but he imagines she'll probobly feel like staying at least until Saturday. There'll be a lot of pain from the insicion and the muscles they manipulated during the operation. Hopefully she'll be feeling much better tomorrow after the anesthesia (sp?) has completely worn off and she's gotten a good full night's rest - though I'm sure she'll still be spending a lot of time sleeping and resting. Hopefully she'll be able to go home soon - my mom's a nurse and as she says, nurses can make horrible patients ....plus my mom's a lot like me and would just rather be home recovering than in a hospital - she kept joking before the operation that she'd be home tonight! I think she had no idea how sore she'd be afterwards... I'll keep you guys updated over the weekend...thanks for thinking of us today it means a lot...and thanks for listening/reading to my rambling...

They wouldn't let me lift a pound for three months....so I hadda pass. Nasty stuff those discs!! Let me know how she does Love...ok? Give her our very best....and tell her we are all thinking of our CHER BUDDY'S MAMA!! ;D SHE ROCKS!! ;)That's one BRAVE WOMAN!! WHOHOO! Di

Megan, Glad to hear that your mom's surgery went ok. I know back surgery is hard on anyone. My mom is also a nurse and you are soooo right...they make bad patients! Hope she gets to go home soon, but she will need lots of help when she gets home. Know you will be there for her... but also make sure you take care of yourself. DEE

Hey Guys! Just a quick update...My momma was in the hospital for 3 days after her surgery. Friday was a really really hard day, pain-wise. She had a "Nurse Rachett" type and the pharmacy wouldn't get her pain medicine to her for over three hours. So it was rough. Friday night my dad and I slept in two chairs to spend the night with her, but that actually turned out to be a pretty good night. Saturday, her white blood count was very elevated so they did a chest x-ray to make sure she didn't have pneumonia or anything. Sunday, her levels were closer to normal so at about 2 pm we brought her home! She's been doing okay since then. Some times are better than others. Right now she's still recovering from the incisional and muscle pain so its hard to tell how successful the procedure was in terms of what it is supposed to fix. She's been spending a lot of time resting and sleeping and she's not allowed to BLT - bend, lift or twist and so I've been spending many hours acting as "Nurse Megen" and helping out as much as I can. Di - I think this surgery that my mom had might be different than what you are talking about because this surgery is very new. Actually, it was just approved by the FDA (?) here, but they've been doing it for years in Europe. I'll keep you posted on how this surgery works out for my mom...maybe if it works out great for her it could help you too. Jan I hope your physical therapy with your ankle is going well! Thanks again guys for thinking about us! My mom thanks you too - I told her you all were thinking of her and she said you're all the best!

Thanks Lisa... Yeah, I was a receptionist in a doctor's office for a few years and my mom is a nurse and so are three of my aunts and another aunt is in the medical field...So I know both sides of the coin. I know its a VERY difficult field to work in with tough hours, not enough pay and little respect or acknowledgements.... but I also am able to recognize incompetence and have little patience and tolerance for it. I was like you were with Katie's nurse with this Nurse Ratchett, Di... after she didn't respond to our call button for over 15 minutes - and even turned it off once without responding - I sought her out in the hall on my own. ;D I also had an argument with a tech who was changing my mom's sheets and being a b*tch about it. As a receptionist, sure I had bad days, and sure there were days when a patient would be getting on my very last nerve...but its called acting - you put on a smile and act as nice as you possibly can. I feel terrible for patients who don't have family there to act as advocates for them!

OMG Megen..word for word Babe! RIGHT ON! I laughed so hard when I read the "out in the hall" bit...I'm here working on my laptop...so quiet here...all are sleeping...and I BELT OUT A LAUGH from your post! YOU ROCK! But I hear ya...I too feel so so bad for patients that don't have family. OMG...that's a heartwrenching thought...never thought of that. I was by Katie's side, literally beside her in her hospital bed for a few hours...then in one of those "CHAIRS"...Feet up in the air backwards and body totally contorted...to try to sleep! LOL and not letting that nurse GET NEAR HER!!Then she went away...and we got a new one for the Midnight Shift. NOW...I GOTTA GET A RESPONSE FROM THIS...Do MIDNIGHT SHIFT NURSES ROCK OR WHAT? Each and everytime I have been in the hospital or have had a friend or family member in ... these NIGHT OWL SHIFTS NURSES...are DA BOMB!!

The overnight nurses I've encountered were absolutely the best (and I wasn't even the patient). Took care of the patient AND me while I slept in that "chair."
No insult intended to the daytime nurses here or anywhere, my experiences with them, fortunately, have all been good, too!

LOL I'm glad I could make you laugh Di! Yeah all my momma's night shift nurses were awesome too. My aunt who's an adult intensive care hospital nurse - so she works crazy hours like night shifts and such - says that night nurses can often afford to spend extra time with patients and give a little extra care etc. because they have a little extra time since oftentimes many of their patients are sleeping. Yeah, Debbie, my mom's one night nurse would ask my dad and I sleeping in "the chairs" if we were ok too everytime she came in to give my mom medicine and check on her.
