Reading Megan`s Deadsy thread made me wonder what other bands/artists do you guys like besides Cher? Some fans only listen to Cher and others own large music collections along with Cher. Doesn`t have to be current either. What type do you like, who do you get into, and who`s box set do you own, if any? I have various music collections and artists that I like. My favorite band will probably always be the Allman Brothers and I had their "Beginnings" album before I even knew Cher was dating Gregg back then. They were my first non-Cher album and I still like them today. I also got into the band Gov`t Mule, with Warren Haynes, plus his solo stuff... after he was in the Allman Brothers for a time, and I love blues music. I have a collection of music by Stevie Ray Vaughn, a boxed set on B.B. King, a various artists blues boxed set, and sets on Lynyard Skynyrd, Ted Nugent, Woodstock, and Jefferson Airplane. I have a blues collection and a large heavy metal collection (80`s "hair band" stuff) that I still have kept, believe it or not! My music philosophy, (kind of), is that rockin` songs are often hidden tracks on an album and not always the ones known as "hits" by radio, so ya don`t know unless you give them a try. I also like classic rock and got into a band called Quicksilver Messenger Service when I watched an old music festival on TV and heard them. Rhino put out a 2 CD set on them and picking it up from the mall was probably the funniest experience I ever had trying to shop for music. We went to Coral Ridge Mall about 20 minutes from here in another town so I was going to look there. This was years back. Anyway, we were comparing prices on this set with an FYE store we were in and the Best Buy store near there. The FYE store at that moment was not very busy at all and hardly had anyone in it but us. We exited the outer doors and went to Best Buy to see if they had the set. They didn`t. Maybe gone like 5-10 minutes at the most. So we went back into FYE and it was PACKED! I thought, what the hell happened?! Turned out some teen group were in signing their new CD and within that short time kids just packed the place. Only thing was... the CD set I wanted was in the very row with all the kids in line! So I got a clerk to butt in line to get it for me because I knew better then to try to explain I wasn`t there to take their spot! And yes, the CD was worth waiting for. Other faves include: Koko Taylor, the Kenny Wayne Shepherd Band, Jonny Lang, The Derek Trucks Band (the kid of Allman Brothers member Butch Trucks), a band called Bloodline (young offspring of some well known artists in bands and they put out only one album I think, but I love it), Buddy Guy, Tony Joe White, Tina Turner (love Steamy Windows!) , Edwin Starr, Anastacia, The Mamas & The Papas, Steppenwolf (love Born To be Wild!), Santana, The Guess Who (love American Woman!), and many others you may never have heard of. If it has a bluesy or rocking guitar groove... then I like it. What makes you tick along with, but NOT ABOVE, Cher? LOL. Pam

Good idea for another thread Pam! And it was inspired by me... Well, I don't own very many cds or lps that aren't Cher. I own about 8-10 Cyndi Lauper cds/lps, two Deadsy cds, Madonna's Ray of Light, the soundtrack to Evita, an Elton John's Greatest Hits cd, and Megan Mullally's cd Big As A Berry... That's off the top of my head, but I seriously think that's the only non-Cher music I actually physically own! However, in this day and age of technology, my mp3 collection on my computer/ipod is a bit more extensive and only partly from downloads. (If I download music it's only a song here and there by an artist, or something that isn't available for purchase.) My other mp3s are from transfering cds that my family or friends have lent me. When I was 5 years old I was a huge Dolly Parton fan. I swore her name was Dolly Partner and I was thrilled when I was allowed to stay up late enough to watch her tv show. I learned my first joke from her tv show. I guess that was a phase though because I didn't continue to listen to her music. She's always held a special place in my heart though because of my affection towards her as a little kid. Recently I started listening to some of her music and there's been a handful that have really grown on me. I don't really like her more "honky tonk" sounding stuff though. Growing up the music I remember always listening to was what my mom listened to - mostly I remember Elton John, Billy Joel and Andrew Lloyd Webber musicals. I still love Elton and Billy today. But today, a handful of Elton songs and Billy Joel's Vienna (since my mom bought the soundtrack to "13 Going On 30" ), are what I mostly listen to by them. In middle school I had a big Madonna phase for awhile when Evita came out. I have always loved the real Eva Peron and the musical too. So when the movie came out I got really into Madonna. Hence me owning "Ray Of Light." Here are some other names of singers/bands I have on my playlist...the Beatles, Bette Midler, Bic Runga, Blondie, Bob Seger, Bonnie Tyler, Carly Simon, Dean Martin, Diana Ross and Diana Ross & the Supremes, Frankie Vali, Goo Goo Dolls, songs from Grease, Linda Rondstadt, Lisa Loeb, Matchbox 20, Meatloaf, Megan Mullally, Melissa Etheridge, Melissa Manchester, Natalie Merchant, Ozzy Osbourne, Pink, the Pretenders, Queen, the Ronettes, Roxy Music, Rufus Wainwright, Sophie B. Hawkins, Train, Stevie Knicks/Fleetwood Mac. But for all of those people there's only bits and pieces of their bodies of work that I'm familiar with. Okay, all that I said above was pretty cohesive I think. Just warning you that I'm about to ramble on and it's almost 6 am and I haven't been to bed - so the rest of this might make no sense at all... I think it's part of my passionate (obsessive?) personality that the singers and actors/actresses I like, I really really like and they tend to dominate my interest. (?) That's why I think there's such a vast difference between the music I know and own by Cher, and then Cyndi, and then Deadsy and then everyone else. And I think something else that has to do with it, is the fact that the artists I like, if I like their work a lot I tend to like them as people a lot. When I became a big Cher fan about 10 years ago, for awhile it was only Cher for me. Then after awhile Cyndi edged her way into my conciousness and over time she's become a definite second to Cher. I love what she's gone through in her life and overcome and what she says, values, believes in. And then comes Deadsy - I've met the band and had a chance to know alittle about them personally - so that means something to me too. It's like how I've always been in terms of my friends - I've always been someone to have a handful of really really close friends, never really been someone with a big group of kind of close friends. I guess that's kind of what I'd say about how I am with the music I like too. Wow, I hope that made some sense to somebody at least.... Also, Dann's been an influence in some of my musical interests. Scissor Sisters is a band I started listening to upon his recommendation and the songs I've heard of their's so far, I really like. They have a cool sound and are fun to watch perform. And then there was his recommendation of Sophie Ellis Bextor. She's the singer who covered Take Me Home - which is the only song I've heard of her's that I don't like. I've heard most of her body of work and would love to hear whatever she puts out! I really really like her music a whole, whole lot. Maybe she's becoming a fourth in my "handful of close" musicians.

Me too Jan, I can't listen to country, I was into the disco's in my younger years and studio54 like u. I still would like to see FLEETWWOD MAC(I think their tour is over-it came during Chers tour) and still would LOVE to see Phil Collins someday(think his tour just ended) WELL can't go to everything so it was either Cher or them. So u know where I stand but still hope to see at least Phil Collins in concert someday and hope to see AGAIN Neil Diamond. I was able to see him at least 4 times on his 2001-2002 tour Oh yea I like some of ELton Johns songs and Billy Joel also. some of Cyndi's also.

My current favorite artist is Poe. She's an alternative singer with wonderful music and lyrics which are written by herself. My personal favorite song is called "Hey Pretty." There's this one awesome part in the song... "I can't forget I am a sole architect/I built the shadows here/I built the growl in the voice I fear./You add it up but to do better than that/you've got to follow me/boy, I'm trying to show you where I'm at." She has great great GREAT lyrics. Even if she didn't have great music, I'd like her as a poet. With lyrics like "I go wild/Wild because the chips are down/Wild because there isn't anybody else around/Wild when the waves start to break/And God knows they're breaking in me now./I go wild because it doesn't make sense/for me to cry out in my own defense/and wild because I would do anything/to tear you off your precious fence," how can you NOT love Poe? Ahhhh

Unfortunately I was brought up on country music. Shania Twain is my favorite, then Reba McEntire, and Brooks & Dunn. I also like some Celine Dion and Dashboard Confessional.
Then there's my musician side that likes classical. mozart, bach, and my favorite to play and listen to, Rachmaninnof.

OK george, now u are talking a different type of country western music. It has electricity in it. Yep, I too like Shana twain and Reba. I even like some songs that Dolly Parton has done. Guess it's the type and beat of the country music that makes a difference.

My taste is so incredibly all-over-the-place... I love Cher, first and foremost, and then Morrissey/The Smiths, and the Cure, Depeche Mode, all that stuff... The Killers, The Flaming Lips, Badly Drawn Boy, Blondie, U2, Cyndi Lauper, Alanis Morisette, Peter Murphy, all kinds of stuff. People who are into the Smiths/Cure/Depeche Mode stuff are always amazed when they find out that I'm so into Cher. But I see no reason to be confined to just 1 genre of music.
